Hi there,

Kim Ishikawa here, backseat baby turned KCRW staffer. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how I’m now raising my own backseat baby, and how KCRW is only here because generations of listeners chose to support it with their time or money (often both).

Knowing that we’re now more than 50,000 members strong gives me real hope that this wonderful community will be here for generations to come. This is especially important now that public media operates without federal funding (that's a loss of $1.3 million annually for KCRW).

As a new(ish) mom, you quickly learn that raising a kid takes a village. The same is true for making KCRW possible, and KCRW is worth it! It’s an independent media source — one that you can trust, isn’t behind a paywall, or driven by profit — a rarity these days. It’s also one of the few places in LA that truly feels like a community. Both virtually (I see you, MBE Live fans) and IRL (at every single KCRW event but especially our Summer Nights — some of the most diverse, joyful gatherings I've been to in LA).

If any of that resonates with you, I hope you'll donate today. Give your tax-deductible gift before midnight and your dollars will be doubled thanks to a $50,000 challenge grant from KCRW Board Member Akio Tagawa. We have just a few hours left to unlock vital funds we'll need to power the year ahead.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy holidays and happy new year. Thank you for believing in KCRW and helping ensure it’s around for future backseat babies.

With gratitude,

Kim

'I Love Chipping Away at the Secrecy:' Will The Epstein Files Come Out This Friday?

Time is ticking for the Department of Justice, which has until this Friday, December 19th, to release all DOJ and FBI files related to Jeffrey Epstein. But how much is actually going to be made public? Through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Bloomberg investigative reporter Jason Leopold has uncovered evidence of a secretive operation on the Epstein files that the FBI called the “Special Redaction Project.” On The Question Everything Substack, Brian Reed sits down with Leopold to discuss the importance of scrutinizing these documents. And this week on Question Everything, we’re airing an episode of Disclosure, where Leopold and First Amendment attorney Matt Topic walk us through what we can expect when the deadline arrives.

LEMON GARLIC BRISKET

Good Food Hanukkah Mains Recipe

When it comes to Hanukkah feasts, brisket usually steals the spotlight. Of course, we love our latkes and sufganiyot (those ridiculously delicious jelly-filled doughnuts), but no holiday table feels complete without a show-stopping main dish. This week on the Good Food Substack, Evan Kleiman shares why she favors a pot roast over brisket, along with the recipe she uses — a dish inspired by her Aunt Min and later refined with help from a Mark Bittman recipe. You’ll also learn how the balance of sweet and sour flavors became embedded in Jewish identity itself.

K-Pop, AI Slop & Ms. Rachel? 2025 Pop Culture Review

It’s 2025. We’re making a Mount Rushmore for pop culture and entertainment. Who (or what) deserves a spot on your national memorial? On The Sam Sanders Show, Sam is joined by Traci Thomas, host of The Stacks podcast, and Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List, as they dissect the creative peaks and messy downfalls of pop culture this year. They ask some big questions: How do we really feel about Taylor Swift? Was One Battle After Another Paul Thomas Anderson’s best film? And can AI be used for good?

Can Europe Trust Trump’s Vision for Peace?

On the latest episode of Left, Right & Center, David Greene poses a fundamental question: “When you hear the word ‘peace,’ what does it bring up for you?” The conversation becomes a deep dive into the White House’s newly released National Security Strategy, a document that has left many European leaders worried. Greene is joined by ABC News legal analyst Sarah Isgur and former DNC communications director Mo Elleithee as they unpack the President’s motivations and what this strategy signals for the future.
