This Sunday, April 28, is our big PieFest and it's one of my favorite things we do with our friends at the Fowler Museum. We ask people, beginners to pros, to bake pies and bring them to one lovely place, UCLA's Royce Quad, to be judged by LA's finest chefs and food writers, no less. Event attendance is free with plenty to do –– there are baking demos, a marketplace with pie slices and lunch options, a beer garden, kids activities, exhibitions at the Fowler, and our DJs will be spinning great tunes. Oh, and for you Ira Glass fans, he'll be there as a judge, too (he's super friendly!). Will you RSVP? I'd love to see you there.
I also want to tell you about two other events with a KCRW connection taking place the Saturday before PieFest.
The first isProjecting L.A., featuring the work of 32 extraordinary street, documentary, and news photographers projected 80 feet wide and 3 stories high outdoors and onto a building in Chinatown. You can experience their great work from theater seating and with food truck fare. One of the photographers is long time KCRW friend and chronicler, Larry Hirshowitz, whose hundreds of KCRW guest artist photos grace our hallways and conference rooms.
The second is 30 Years of AAARGHT!, a retrospective of artist and illustrator, EMEK — well known for his work with rock concert and gig posters. For those of you who remember our A Sounds Eclectic Evening series of benefit concerts, we too were graced by the art of this “Thinking Man’s Poster Artist,” as dubbed by Henry Rollins. Check it out in DTLA, it’s the music lover’s art show.
As the voracious fun and culture lovers that you are, I have no doubt you could hit up all three events this weekend!
See you out there,
Connie Alvarez

P.S. Write me with your weekend plans. As always, I’m curious.
In the latest episode of KCRW’s acclaimed music documentary podcast, Lost Notes introduces you to the Mizell Brothers: one (Fonce) wrote hits for Motown, while the other (Larry) worked on the Apollo mission. From their secret home studio in the Hollywood hills, they created a unique sound that jazz purists hated, but which strongly influenced the sounds of decades to come. Cohosts Novena Carmel and Michael Barnes explore how LA itself served as the inspiration for their greatest work with artists like Donald Byrd, A Taste of Honey, and Johnny Hammond.
Michael Pollan’s earlier books, The Omnivore's Dilemma and The Botany Of Desire, provoked a national conversation about the wonder of plants, what we eat, and where our food comes from. More recently, his keen interest in the plants we consume has also led him into the world of psychedelics and mind-altering plants. In How To Change Your Mind; What The New Science Of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, And Transcendence, he explores their therapeutic potential, remarking that the outcomes in addressing certain types of depression, anxiety, and addiction are nothing short of astonishing. His most recent book, This is Your Mind on Plants, challenges our commonly held views on drugs and psychoactive plants — including our pervasive use of caffeine; “90% of people on our planet have a daily relationship with caffeine,” Pollan says, “that includes our children if we're letting them drink soda.”
Humans have fallen in love and experienced heartache for millenia, but what makes these experiences so powerful? This week Myisha and Jonathan Bastian, host of KCRW’s Life Examined, team up to talk about the addictive nature of love, the qualities of a healthy relationship, and healing post-divorce. Listen or read the full transcript here. And remember, if you need advice about dating, sex, or relationships, send Myisha an email or voice memo at sexlife@kcrw.org. Your message will be kept confidential.
Good Food host Evan Kleiman talks fresh fava beans with Press Play’s Madeleine Brand. The ancient staple is in season right now in its freshest form. Evan says, “The young pods can be grilled or sauteed or boiled, then dressed like salad. They also make a surprising falafel color-wise. And the Turkish chef Öslem Warren prepares them several ways with both olive oil and in yogurt. Here are 18 ideas from Bon Appetit. But the queen of all green fava dishes is the dill-inflected Persian rice dish baghali polo. It’s often served as an accompaniment to fish or lamb shanks, but can easily make a meal on its own with a yogurt salad as an accompaniment.”
Keep up with Mo Elleithee (Left), David Green (host and Center), and Sarah Isgur (Right) on Fridays as they dig into the latest political issues. Last week they took on the commencement of Donald Trump’s trial over alleged hush money payments and its media coverage. This week, The Atlantic’s McKay Coppins steps in to moderate from the Center for a discussion about Robert F. Kennedy’s impact on 2024, and how the recent foreign aid package highlights GOP divisions.
We want to send you to experience Luna Luna — rides, games, and attractions by visionary artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and David Hockney are on view for the first time in four decades. The first three members to reply to this email with their favorite art style will receive a pair of tickets care of KCRW.
