Diaspora Dance Party

DO: A Diaspora Dance Party

In LA, global communities mix and mingle, collide and compound — and songs hold the DNA of their cultural traditions. What does a diaspora move to, and what moves a diaspora? The answers are in the music! This Sunday, Zócalo and KCRW Present a dance party to the gateway of the region, the Port of LA, featuring sets by KCRW DJ Raul Campos, Wilmington DJ Mario “Dred” Lopez, and a very special emcee, the LA TimesGustavo Arellano. Dance, check out art activities by LA Commons, a pop-up Wilmington Art Walk, and connect to new music and each other!

Here are a few of the many shapes and types of fresh pasta found in Modena. Photo by Evan Kleiman.-1

MAKE: Egg-Based Pasta

Good Food host Evan Kleiman is back from Italy where she partook of gloriously fresh pasta all’uovo (read about her faves) and she wants you to know that, “Making fresh pasta at home is actually pretty easy with practice. I recommend taking an in-person class and failing that, then looking to the internet for mentors. In LA, we have master sfoglino Evan Funke, so here’s a class from him. If you want a deep dive into older Italian women sharing their secrets, go to the Pasta Grannies’ YouTube channel and go nuts watching them. They’re charming and have the skill only a lifetime of making pasta can bring. And if you’re a nerd who needs the sciencey explanation and exploration of the process, here’s the Serious Eats version."

ATTEND: LA’s Moth GrandSLAM Championship

There’s a Spanish saying, “cada cabeza es un mundo,” meaning, “every head is a world,” and no one takes us exploring as many fascinating worlds as The Moth does in one night of a GrandSLAM event. The storytellers are 10 LA StorySlam winners invited back to the stage to battle for the title of LA storytelling champion. It all goes down on December 11th at the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo and it’s sure to sell out. But don’t fret, KCRW listeners — we got you.
