Head to the South Bay this long weekend for the Fiesta Hermosa Locale! This fiesta goes back 50 years, but this year they’ve added Locale to emphasize shopping and all things local. It’s three days of live music, arts and crafts, and food and drink. Masks are strongly encouraged and required indoors, and they’ll have a vaccination clinic onsite, which if you take advantage of that day, will get you in free!
Blindfold on, spin three times, then everyone get the heck out of the way until the candies and treats fly free! This is the common story of the piñata, that ubiquitous object associated with celebration, nostalgia, and sheer happiness. Now explore the artistry that goes into piñata making with a show all about handcrafted piñatas and piñata-based art objects. Learn about this widely popular Mexican tradition, and mark your calendars for a piñata workshop on September 25th!
With Labor Day now a week away (how did that happen??), what better food for Evan Kleiman to school us on than the smash burger. She calls it the quintessential LA burger – these are the ones made by “smashing” the chuck meat into a flat griddle, not a grill. If you use a grill that’s cool, just make sure to use a griddle pan on top for max surface heat and to keep all those fats in. Evan gets science-y on this one, describing the Maillard reaction, which is “a series of cascading transformations that happen when protein meets high heat.”
LA Pink Floyd fans, remember piling into your friend’s car to catch that trippy Pink Floyd dome experience at the Griffith Park Observatory? Well, here’s the grown-up version! Explore the inimitable band’s history through an audiovisual exhibit opening this weekend. UK papers describe it as “almost as good as seeing the band live.” It includes previously unreleased gig recordings, original instruments, unknown scribbles, and personal mementos from the band members. Check this one out at the Vogue Multicultural Museum starting Friday!
Here’s one for all of our New York-based members and fans: the Independent Art Festival is taking place September 9-12th at Cipriani South Street in New York City. The newly restored venue is the landmark Battery Maritime Building, open to the public for the first time in several decades. This will offer 44 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries an exclusive setting to showcase over 80 artists’ presentations. The fair will also embrace a hybrid model by launching an OVR platform, including new features, interviews, artist takeovers, and behind-the-scenes studio footage.
