EP. 8 What Now?

In this final episode of Veteran’s Row, after a year and a half on the street, the Veterans Row homeless camp is dismantled by sanitation crews. But for many of the veterans who lived there, it’s more of a beginning than an end. So, what’s next? And what was it all for? Most of the veterans still don’t have what they’ve wanted all along — permanent housing on the massive West LA VA campus. Still, more progress is being made there than ever before, leaving room for hope.

Behind the Scenes with City of Tents

There’s still time to meet the creator and subjects of KCRW’s powerful podcast, City of Tents: Veterans Row. Reporter and series host Anna Scott spent more than a year reporting from a large homeless encampment set up as a protest by US military veterans outside the gates of the VA campus in Brentwood. Join us virtually to find out how she got the story and why she felt it needed to be told. Meet Jeffrey Powers and Rob Reynolds, two veterans featured in the podcast, learn how they view the issue of homelessness from their own experience, and what it was like having a series made about their lives.

EP. 4 Royale with Cheese

Pulp Fiction was shooting: Cracked glass, frothing at the mouth with mushroom soup, sugar cocaine, a roaring tiger, and "Royale with Cheese." Tarantino was having the time of his life directing his magnum opus. But the pressure was consuming him: The footage was good, but what would it add up to? And would it be great…or awful? Would he screw this up and with it his career? He reads a Variety notice about his father — a man he had never met who was now cashing in on his son’s success. Pulp wraps and Tarantino introduces his film himself at preview screenings. The jubilant crowd goes wild. The movie explodes at the box office, forever changing the landscape for independent film. Controversy and ego intrude during award season. Tarantino experiences a chance meeting with the man who would be his father. Finally, the master of Pulp Fiction has choice words for his younger self.

Partner Screening: Carmen

KCRW and Sony Pictures Classics invite you to a special advance screening of Carmen followed by a conversation with director, Benjamin Millepied and actress, Melissa Barerra moderated by KCRW's Madeleine Brand. Carmen follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. Carmen (Melissa Barerra) survives a terrifying and dangerous illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard, who murders two other immigrants in her group in cold-blood. When the border guard and his patrol partner, Aidan (Paul Mescal) — a Marine with PTSD — become embroiled in a deadly standoff, Carmen and Aidan are forced to escape together. They make their way north towards Los Angeles in search of Carmen’s mother’s best friend, the mercurial Masilda (Rossy De Palma) and owner of La Sombra nightclub — a sanctuary of music and dance. Carmen and Aidan find both solace and their unwavering love for one another in the safety of Masilda’s magical refuge, but time is running out as the police hunt closes in.
