Happy Summer Solstice!

It’s your Summer Nights Field Guide captain and KCRW DJ, Tyler “Boogie” Boudreaux here, and the days are long, the sunsets are vibrant, and the Summer Nights season is in full fever with not one but TWO chances to get down this weekend.

First up on Friday night is a ‘90s-themed party at a new Summer Nights location, ASU FIDM Museum in downtown. And on Saturday night, it’s fun for the whole family with the return of Summer Nights at the Kidspace Museum in Pasadena. Think of it almost like you have one opportunity to entertain your inner child with an infusion of throwback nostalgia, and you have another opportunity to entertain your literal child with a family dance party and interactive outdoor campus.

No matter how you justify coming to both parties 😉, the two all-ages events will have music, games, and museum exhibits for the whole family to explore, so it truly is a win-win all around. There’s a lot of fun to cover, so strap in and scroll for the deets!

Here’s a playlist I made full of nostalgic ‘90s throwbacks to sing along to while you get ready.

We’re kicking off the weekend with an old-school ‘90s dance party at ASU FIDM Museum, a Summer Nights location we’re excited to be activating for the first time! It’s LA’s only fashion museum, so be sure to step out in your best ‘90s fit and maybe consider dusting off those Cross-Colours overalls or perhaps even a yellow plaid Chanel suit a la Cher in Clueless.

It feels like the ‘90s are popping up everywhere these days, from style trends to samples in music, and pop culture references; its inspiration is echoed all over our modern world. As a ‘90s baby, I am all for it. At the museum, you can explore the ‘90s resurgence through a fashion, culture, and pre-social media lens at the exhibit Obsessed: Fashion and Nostalgia in the ‘90s. And you’ll get to check out the work of iconic designers like Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Franco Moschino, Gianni Versace, and more. But this event isn’t just for the fashion lovers, there’s also a cinematic arts activation, an interactive documentary experience, an indie video game showcase, and a ‘90s-themed polaroid photobooth to capture all the mems. If you share on Insta, don’t forget to tag us @kcrw!

And on the dancefloor, expect to groove to tunes by two of our new KCRW DJs, Olive Kimoto and John Tejada! Here’s a playlist I made for you and the kids to dance to during the pre-game playtime.

Schoooool’s out for summer (Alice Cooper voice), and we have the PERFECT event to bring the kids to and let them take the lead on the fun! Last year’s Summer Nights at Kidspace was a huge hit, and we can’t wait to be back for another special family-focused party in Pasadena.

With 40 hands-on exhibits, a variety of play areas, and interactive water features, kids of all ages will have an endless supply of options to spark curiosity and imagination, and will most definitely have a ball playing with other kids. Plus, there’ll be kid-centric jams on the dancefloor with tunes from KCRW DJ Anne Litt and the Summer Nights debut of KCRW DJ Peanut Butter Wolf! Both are parents who have direct knowledge of what it takes to get the little ones to shake, so you already know they’ll be throwing down tunes for the whole family to dance together.
